Description

Books for young readers are the tools we use to pass on values and build a sense of community in the next generation. Community and conversation among different cultural groups seem especially important right now, at a time when the forces of nativism and pluralism are clashing on an epic scale. Join the award-winning publishing house Restless Books for a day of programs celebrating diversity in children's and YA literature. Programs will include a presentation and storytime by Arshia Sattar, author of Ramayana: An Illustrated Retelling, and an art activity with Mexican cartoonist/artist Eko, illustrator of Juan Don Quixote of La Mancha: 400th Anniversary Edition, and Villoro's contemporary middle-grade classic, The Wild Book. This event is part of the inaugural Restless Readers Weekend. Presented by Restless Books, this weekend of programs invites participants to explore literature in depth with professors and authors, interact with other devoted readers, create community, and ask essential questions literature prompts us to explore: Who are we? Who are our neighbors? In what way do we all shape the culture we live in? For more information on Restless Readers Weekend: http://restlessbooks.org/readers-weekend. SCHEDULE 1:00 - 1:30pm Indian classicist, scholar, and children's book author Arshia Sattar will discuss her retelling of the Ramayana (Auditorium) 2:00 - 2:30pm Special Storytelling of the Ramayana with Arshia Sattar (Reading Library) Book signing to follow in the Great Hall 3:00 - 4:00pm Art activity: Draw your own Wild Book with Mexican artist Eko.
